Tools
We have gathered some resources and tools related to the work being done in improving grade-level reading proficiency:
- Federal Funding Guide: Learning to Read identifies more than 100 federal funding sources that can be used to address the root causes of failing to read, to help fund remediation strategies, and to build cohesive infrastructure and systems necessary to effectively train and guide professionals. It offers users “best bet” funding sources, on-the-ground examples and allows users to search by funding purpose, eligibility and special populations. Download the PDF here.
The guide was developed by The Finance Project to support the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading. The 176-page guide, which features dozens of charts identifying funding sources and requirements, is also available for download at: www.financeproject.org. - Early Learning Councils: States have submitted plans for a federal program establishing state-level councils to “improve coordination and collaboration among a wide array of early childhood programs and services.”
- Chronic Absence: Youngsters don’t learn if they’re not in school, but every year 10 percent of kindergarteners and first graders miss a month of school. For strategies on how to reduce these absences go to the Attendance Works website at www.attendanceworks.org.
- Parent Engagement: Parents are their children’s first teachers, but they sometimes need a hand engaging in the education process. America’s Promise Alliance developed this toolkit for increasing parent engagement as a dropout prevention measure.
- Summer Learning Loss: Low-income students often fall behind over summer vacation, unless they’re engaged in the right sort of summer programs. For ideas and examples, visit the National Summer Learning Association website at www.summerlearning.org.
- Early Childhood Data: The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) has compiled a set of resources that highlight federal initiatives that support the development of statewide, comprehensive early childhood data systems, as well as information on the need for, uses of, and development of state comprehensive early childhood data systems.
